“Somatic therapy is based on the idea that emotions are stored in the muscles, in the neurological patterns of the body, after a traumatic experience, which can cause physical symptoms. Somatic therapy techniques help people process and release these emotions in their muscle-cellular memory. So it’s about enhancing body awareness, intentionally moving the body, and recalling resources,” says Mikki Williams, LMT.
The Importance of Addressing Root Causes
Mikki emphasizes the need to approach healing holistically, focusing on the root cause of tension rather than just addressing symptoms. She compares this to a fish tank, explaining, “You could have a brown fish tank with brown water in it and medicate the fish, or you could clean the fish tank and improve their quality of life.” By addressing the core issues, somatic release helps the body let go of stored tension and discomfort, similar to how cleaning the tank purifies the fish’s environment.
The Power of Self-Acceptance
An integral part of somatic release is recognizing and releasing internalized emotions, like guilt or unresolved grief. Mikki recounts, “I asked a client, ‘Have you forgiven yourself?’ and she said, ‘Wait, that’s a thing?'” This kind of self-acceptance can be life-changing and essential for letting go of tension that’s been locked in the body. When people find permission to release these emotions, they often experience an immediate physical shift, allowing for deeper healing.
Why Relaxation Matters
For somatic release to be most effective, it’s crucial for participants to allow themselves to relax fully. According to Mikki, “The hardest part about relaxing is just giving yourself permission.” Relaxing can be a challenge for many, yet this state of ease enables the body to recover and release tension effectively, whether from everyday stress or deeper emotional pain.
A Holistic Path to Healing
Not a substitute for psychotherapy, somatic release is a complementary approach that encourages both body and mind healing. For those dealing with anxiety, chronic pain, or emotional trauma, somatic release offers a unique way to connect with the body’s capacity to heal. Releasing these built-up tensions can make a difference in one’s emotional and physical well-being, helping people move forward with a renewed sense of calm and resilience.
