Positional Release Massage in Lansing
Positional release massage, or strain counterstrain or positional release therapy, is a gentle manual therapy technique that alleviates pain and tension in muscles and joints.
Licensed Massage Therapist Mikki Williams will find your tender points or areas of discomfort in the body and then position your body or limb to reduce strain on those points, thereby relieving pain and promoting relaxation.

How It Works
During a positional release massage session, Mikki will first identify tender points or areas of tension by palpating the body. Once these points are located, she will carefully position the body or limb in a comfortable and relaxed position that minimizes strain on the affected muscles and joints. The position is held for a short period, typically around 90 seconds to 2 minutes, allowing the muscles to relax and reset. It’s not about going back in time. It’s dissociation for 90 seconds or 90 seconds without replaying that memory in your head. If you stop worrying about it for 90 seconds, that’s the reset.
The muscle spindle acts like a spring. When you push on it, it widens. And that spring releases neurofeedback that’s going on in the muscle.
For example, if a client has neck and shoulder tension, Mikki will place a thumb and index finger right where their shoulder joint meets the neck. She will then pull the client’s ear toward their shoulder and place their hands above their head, keeping her hand by the neck and shoulder for about 90 seconds while she works the other side of the body with predictable Swedish relaxation strokes.
When she returns their body to position and tests the pressure once again, the client can withstand more pressure on the side that received positional release massage than the side with the traditional Swedish stroke.
Who Can Benefit?
Positional release massage aims to reset the neuromuscular system, reduce muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and alleviate pain. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain and those recovering from injuries or surgery.
Positional release massage is generally considered safe and gentle, making it suitable for people of all ages and physical conditions. However, it’s essential to communicate with your massage therapist about any specific concerns or conditions you may have to ensure that the technique is applied safely and effectively.
